Avondale House and Forest Park has much to
offer the visitor , whether
their interest is Charles Stewart Parnell – “ The Uncrowned
King of Ireland” , the development of forestry in Ireland
and the extensive collection of trees and shrubs in this 214
hectares estate from around the globe , the long open sweep
of The Great Ride to the towering conifers on the banks of
the Avonmore River..
Avondale House was built in 1777 for Samuel Hayes, a
barrister but whose passion for trees led him to write his
first book on Irish Forestry.
The House passed to the Parnell’s in 1795, and on the 27th
June, 1846 when Ireland was in the grip of famine Charles
Stewart Parnell was born, he went on to become one of the
greatest political leaders of modern Irish history.
The House features original plasterwork and furniture
belonging to the Parnell family.
Directions: On the N11 – exit Junction 17
for Rathdrum, take R752 to Rathdrum and L2149 to Avondale
House and Forest Park.
Avondale is 1.5miles south of Rathdrum.
