DONARD

Donard/ Glen of Imaal is a pretty village at the northern
end of Glen of Imaal. The place is associated with Michael
Dwyer and the cottage in which he fought the encircling
British troops in 1799 and escaped over the snow-covered
mountains is situated here.
Donard has 2 pubs as plenty of B&B’s. Its also has a Caravan
/ Campsite ( Moat Farm) in the village and a Hostel in
Ballinclea (Mountain Ventures). Donard and Glen of Imaal are
excellent bases for Hillwalking being a convenient base to
ascend Lugnaquilla, Leinster Highest Mountain and second
highest outside of Kerry.
Glen of Imaal is home to the Coolmoney Military range and
while caution and planning is necessary walkers are always
welcome as even when the range is in use there are plenty of
other options for hillwalking.
To check out when the range is in use go to
www.mountaineering.ie and click on Access and
Conservation.
